“With great sadness” Alaska DPS ends search for missing Troy, Texas family

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – The Alaska Dept. of Public Safety on Aug. 20 announced it was ending its search for The Maynards, a Troy family who went missing when a boat capsized off the coast in Homer on Aug. 3.

“It is with great sadness, we are ending the active search efforts for the Maynard Family,” Alaska DPS wrote in a social media post. “If something is located or possibly located in the future, we will respond to assess what is located if requested.”

David Maynard, Mary Maynard and their two children, Colton and Brantley, were vacationing in Alaska when they fell into ocean when a boat capsized.

The Coast Guard received a mayday call around 7 p.m. on Aug. 3 for a 28-foot aluminum vessel that began taking on water with eight people aboard, according to Petty Officer Shannon Kearney.

Four people were rescued by a good Samaritan vessel, “Salty Sea”, from a life raft, according to the Coast Guard. The Maynards, however, were not found that night.

The rescue search for the Central Texas was originally conducted by the United States Coast Guard, which later confirmed it had to make the painful decision to suspend the search. The Alaska Department of Public Safety took over the search soon after.
