Weekend Gardner: Growing and cooking brussels sprouts

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – You have a little time left to put those brussels sprouts plants in the ground this season.

“Right now is the window of time to get them in the ground before it starts to get too warm to be able to grow these guys,” said Randy Seagraves with Texas A&M AgriLife.

Seagraves says the cold season crop is related to the cabbage family.

“These guys like a little bit more heavier soil. So we’re going to plant them up the point where those first sets of leaves are. We’re going to pack them down a bit. Lots of compost,” he said.

He also shared a way to cook them once they’ve grown.

“Cast iron skillet, little bit of butter and olive oil, about a third of a cup of vegetable or chicken broth,” said Seagraves. “Put them on there on a medium high heat. Cover it and just let them go for about five minutes. Just check on them, stir them up a little bit at that point.”
