Weekend Gardener: Using your harvest

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – There can be a sense of satisfaction in using food items from your own garden when you’re cooking.

There are tools available to help you figure out how you’d like to use those herbs and vegetables.

“Herbs are so wonderful. They absolutely are,” said Jayla Fry with Texas A&M AgriLife. “They’re one of my most favorite things to grow and we have so many resources where you can go and learn how to use these.”

Fry says there’s a great cookbook through the AgriLife Extension’s Dinner Tonight Program. You can find it here.

“It’s a wonderful research-based, proven recipes that are just excellent,” she said.

You can also use the “Herbs Made Easy” herb wheel.

“This is a really nifty little tool. It has a nice picture with a name and you just roll the wheel around and it will tell you some of the uses that you can use those herbs in,” said Fry.

You can purchase that tool here.

“We have a full line of what we call path to the plate one-pagers,” she said. “They have information about lots of vegetables, but herbs in particular because that’s what we’re focusing on. It talks about how to grow it, if you’re at a farmers market or a grocery store, how to purchase it. What you’re looking for, maybe what you’re not looking for. It’ll tell you how to use it.”

You can find that resource here.
