Weekend Gardener: Texas A&M horticulture expert explains how, benefits of garden solarizing
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – While the summer season is still in full swing, it’s about that time to make sure your gardens are ready for a drop in temperatures as we prepare for the fall. A junior master gardener from Texas A&M shows us how this works.
“We are going to use the sun to our advantage to help get our gardens ready for the fall,” said Junior Master Gardener Randy Seagraves with Texas A&M AgriLife.
Solarizing is a process teachers use when they’re closing down their gardens for the summer. Seagraves demonstrated how you can do it at home, too.

“The great thing about this is when you do this for about six weeks over the summer months before you have your fall garden in place, it’s going to be able to keep your weeds and your insect problems down,” Seagraves added. “It’s gonna help your organic matter drop down, and research shows it will make those nutrients more water soluble and you’re going to have more successful thriving garden crop in the fall because you’re taking these few minutes to do this now.”
