Weekend Gardener: Planting vegetables
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – It’s time to start planting vegetables.
“So around March 5 is our average last freeze or frost date,” said Jayla Fry with Texas A&M AgriLife. “Now, I would say check your extended forecast just to make sure.”
Fry said there are lots of vegetable transplants available if you are putting them in a garden. She said you can also plant them in containers.
“What I would recommend when you’re doing that is to use a good quality potting mix. Something that drains well, has a great texture that will allow the water to flow through,” said Fry.
She said there are plenty of options when choosing what to plant.
“You can do a single plant, maybe a tomato by itself. Or you may want to do a salsa garden or a pizza garden where you do a combination of plants in one pot,” said Fry. “That can be a really fun thing to do if you have a small space, maybe a patio. The beauty of containers is you can move that according to where your light is.”
