Washington-on-the-Brazos on their Juneteenth celebration
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Washington-on-the-Brazos is once again holding its Annual Judge Eddie E. Harrison Juneteenth Heritage Celebration.
The event will celebrate the evolution and legacy of Black music, with artists from across genres.
Dr. Tina Henderson and Cherly DaBera joined First News at Four on Monday to discuss the free event.
Dr. Henderson said that before the performances, there will be a presentation to explain what you will hear played.
“It’s looking at how those who were once enslaved brought over a lot of instruments, a lot of rhythm, a lot of ways of communicating through music. From in the fields while they were working, they were singing, sometimes passing messages, to how the music evolved from Spirituals to Gospel to Blues to Jazz to R&B to rap and how it evolved,” she said.
DaBera mentioned that there won’t just be performances.
“There will be food trucks and vendors of all kinds and there will be informational booths,” she said.
The event is on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
