Three candidates for State Rep. District 12 up for vote Tuesday

AUSTIN, Texas (KBTX) – Voters will be heading to the polls to decide each party’s candidate for the new State Representative for District 12.

Current seat holder, Rep. Kyle Kacal (R), announced he won’t be seeking reelection, bringing three Republican newcomers to the table.

On the Republican ballot, voters will have Ben Bius, Trey Wharton and John Harvey Slocum to choose from at the polls on Tuesday. This district covers Robertson, Madison, Walker, Grimes and Washington Counties plus southern portions of Brazos County.

Candidates say a hot topic from constituents has been the border.

Bius says changes need to happen.

“Take back Texas from the federal government and education. Take back Texas, take back our border. The border is a huge issue it’s going to impact our Sheriffs, it’s going to impact our schools, it’s going to impact our healthcare system,” he said.

Harvey Slocum says not only does border security raise concerns, but he’s looking to limit the amount of property sold to people from other countries.

“I think that’s a national security issue and we need to be very careful of who we’re letting in our country and certainly who we’re letting buy property in our country, foreign entities that have ill will or people connected to entities that have ill will towards us as a country,” he said.

For Trey Wharton, he says the person representing District 12 needs to be aware of what’s happening.

“We’re not in the middle of it, but we kind of are because everything’s coming through District 12. We’re going to see a huge growth coming straight up I-45, Highway 6, and 290 and that’s going to affect every county in this district,” he said.

Only one person is running for the candidacy on the Democratic ballot, Dee Howard Mullins. She will run against the Republican candidate in the November 2024 General Election.

We have full interviews with Bius, Harvey Slocum and Wharton for voters. Polls close at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
