Texas DPS IPC program hits milestone in child rescues
AUSTIN, Texas (KBTX) – Texas DPS troopers recently hit a milestone when it comes to child rescues.
Since 2009, troopers have rescued 600 children during traffic stops, and DPS credits the Interdiction for the Protection of Children Program (IPC).
The IPC program began training troopers and officers about 15 years ago. Officials receive this training through a two-day, 16-hour course that uses a child-centered approach and teaches troopers to assess circumstances to determine if a child is at risk.
Lieutenant Greg Reyero joined News 3 at Six Thursday to talk about the program and what their training looks like.
“When we look at this 600 number, we are only looking at the rescues by Texas Highway Troopers. There’s many more across the state and across the nation. We are looking at officers, troopers that went out, they are doing their everyday activities of stopping cars for speed, equipment violations and they go beyond traffic stops to look for other Nefarious activities, and in doing that, they are able to rescue these children,” Lt. Reyero said. “A lot of people think it’s just another human trafficking training but what it is, it’s a crimes against children training.
