Texas A&M Corps commandant retires to serve university president
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets’ commandant announced his retirement Monday morning and new position within Aggieland.
Commandant Brigadier General Patrick R. Michaelis will now serve as the special assistant to Texas A&M President General Mark Welsh III.
Gen. Welsh has named retired US Air Force Lieutenant Gen. Loyd S. “Chip” Utterback as interim commandant.
After 30 years serving the US Army and two years at this post, Michaelis said he graciously looks forward to the new opportunity to serve the community.
A statement from the commandant reads in part, “One of the great loves of my life is the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. Its focus on developing leaders of character for the global challenges of tomorrow demands that we continue to advance as we preserve what makes Aggieland so unique.”
In Michaelis’ new position, Gen. Welsh thanked him for his dedication in the release:
“I extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to General Michaelis for his service to Texas A&M University and the Corps of Cadets. He worked tirelessly to improve leadership training and the overall Corps experience while also expanding the reach of the Corps through expanded recruitment efforts.”
Michaelis’ last day as commandant is Monday. From there, Gen. Utterback will take over until a permanent commandant is appointed.
