Strong showing of support for Shiro VFD’s first cookoff competition fundraiser

SHIRO, Texas (KBTX) – A fundraising event for a local volunteer fire department was a big success this weekend.

On Saturday, the Shiro Volunteer Fire Department hosted its first-ever Chili, Beans and Gumbo cook-off competition.

The fire department works with other agencies to serve a 76-square-mile area in Grimes County.

The money raised goes to maintenance, training, and equipment for the fire department.

It was also a chance for firefighters to meet their neighbors.

“The bigger part to me, I think is we get to be with the community, we get to interact with them, hang out, say how they shake their hand, you know, we’re not running around, God forbid, take care of fires or car, car wrecks or whatever. So it’s. It’s great to get with the community and just hang out with them and just have fun together, you know,” said Assistant Fire Chief Scott Snow.

The team “Fast Cookers” won the gumbo challenge.

“White Switch Cookers” took home first place in the chili contest and Midsouth won the beans contest.

The Tasters Choice award went to the “Legacy Cookers” team.
