Spare Hand Students: Texas A&M student creates app to help residents
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – A Texas A&M student created an app to help residents with tasks they need to be done.
If you know anything about Big Event, you know it is popular around the community for one day where students help residents with needs. This new app will ensure that service can be available for residents year-round.
Zach Miller came up with the idea and launched the app called Spare Hand Students in April. Over the last two weeks, the number of jobs completed by students via the app jumped from 150 to 500.
Customers can use the app to find help with tasks around the house, errands, yard work, heavy lifting, pet care and more. Miller says many of these students have majors that align with tasks.
“A lot of people look down on students and say, ‘Hey let’s wait until after college’ and stuff but these students are really good at what they do so that quality aspect. The final thing is you get to support a local student in need,” he said. “They’re juniors or seniors and a lot of them kind of have in their bio their degree and what it does for the customers. It really allows them to kind of see kind of who they should choose because, for instance, the construction science kids are awesome at everything. So it’s like they’ll put in there and then they say that they have like 10 years experience with odd jobs.”
Miller says he hopes to continue expanding his reach in the community for customers and even reach other campuses to help launch Spare Hand Students across the state. The app can be downloaded in the Apple App Store or Google Play.
