School districts work toward the health of student-athletes during the August heat

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Bryan and College Station ISD schools are about to start back up again, but school athletics have already started practicing in the August heat.

Water and AC are two things that prevent you from having a heat stroke, but when you’re outside running around, it’s not that easy.

“Cause the heat, it’s so hot right now outside,” Kassidi Flater said.

Student-athletes have already started practicing in the blistering sun.

Kassidi Flater, College Station ISD Nursing Coordinator, says kids don’t understand the importance of staying hydrated.

“At this age, they’re not used to drinking as much water, and they don’t realize that they can’t do it five minutes before they go outside,” Falter said.

According to Bryan ISD Athletic Trainer Josh Woodall, they use a bulb globe temperature to measure heat stress in direct sunlight.

“We have weather stations at both of our high schools that monitor the conditions on-site and send alerts to all of our coaches as well as our athletic training staff to inform them of the current conditions,” Woodall said. “And what modifications need to be made.”

Each outside sport has different modifications that can be made to ensure the health and safety of its students.

Before sending your kids off to school, make sure they bring a refillable water bottle so they don’t end up in the nurse’s office.
