School districts encourage students to bring a refillable water bottle to school to stay hydrated
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Bryan and College Station ISD schools start next week, but student-athletes have already started training.
When you are outside running around in the August heat, it’s easy to go from sweating and uncomfortable to unsafe conditions.
According to College Station ISD nurse Kassidy Flater, staying hydrated is the most important thing to do when experiencing excessive heat.
Cross country, football, and marching band are just a few of the activities practiced outside. She says symptoms like dizziness and becoming light-headed can signal that you have had too much heat exposure.
“Make sure that they have a water bottle that they can fill up and make sure that they know how much water they need to be drinking and when they should start doing that,” Falter said. “Um, they should start probably now, you know, getting hydrated before school even starts.”
Both school districts say they have measures in place to ensure the health and safety of their students.
