R.C. Slocum, Mark Johnson hold panel at Larry J. Ringer library

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The City of College Station hosted the ‘Exploring History’ luncheon Wednesday, featuring a panel of Texas A&M University athletic icons.

Attendees heard from R.C. Slocum, Mark Johnson, John Thornton, and Alan Cannon.

The four Aggies represent several decades of athletics experience, multiple championship wins, and Hall of Fame recognition.

”When you think about R.C. Slocum with football, Mark Johnson with baseball, and John Thornton with basketball, I mean it’s just a great group to me. It’s about family, the Aggie family,” Cannon, longtime Associate Athletic Director for Athletic Communications, said.

They answered questions and reflected on defining moments across the history of Texas A&M athletics while reminiscing on their own careers and the legacies they left both on and off the field.

”Athletics does a tremendous job at Texas A&M. I think they – we – have quality coaches, quality players, administrators. We’ve got a great fanbase,” Mark Johnson, former Texas A&M baseball coach, said, “We’re pretty lucky, what we have here.”
