Primary runoff Election Day goes smoothly in Brazos County

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Election workers got up bright and early to work the polls for the May 28 primary runoff election day in Brazos County.

According to the Brazos County Elections Administration, 1,283 voters voted just before three on election day. As for early voting, there were 3,103 ballots cast. Elections Administrator Trudy Hancock says this is right on par for this type of election.

“We only have two local races that really can impact our runoff,” Hancock said. “Local races are usually what bring out voters for a runoff.”

Despite some storms earlier in the day, Hancock said she doesn’t believe that deterred voters from heading to the polls.

“Lots of time rain brings people out I don’t know why,” Hancock said. “But I did get a call earlier today that we have several surrounding counties that are going to be doing extended hours just because of the weather and they had to shut down for a while during the day.”

Hancock said elections workers were ready to go before the polls opened at 7 a.m. and since then everything has run smoothly.

“With only eight locations it’s a little easier for us to get up and get going if there are any technical difficulties we have teams out that can get out and hit those pretty quick,” Hancock said.

As for what has contributed to everything going so well at the polls Hancock said it is having good people working them.

“We have a lot of really seasoned judges that really know what they’re doing and just being sure they’re in key locations to get up and going plus we have staff members from my team that go out and we touch base with every location before we start,” Hancock said.

With the runoff election wrapping up Hancock said preparations for the 2024 presidential election are already underway.

“Really since the first of the year,” Hancock said. “There’s always things we can do in the background to get ready. Packets to make for ballots by mail, talking with our polling places to make sure they’re going to be available during November so we don’t have any surprises last minute.”
