Potential designs for Midtown Park playground revealed

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The Travis Bryan Midtown Park Playground is moving closer towards construction.

Tuesday afternoon a contractor presented potential playground designs to the Bryan City Council during a workshop meeting.

Deputy City Manager Hugh Walker says they’re tying to tie the design into the natural setting. They’re also looking for an eye catching element, but he says what’s most important is that the kids enjoy it.

“We want to make sure that the elements that are in the park are really able for the younger kids — anywhere from four or five years, on up to 10 or 12-years-old — to play on and have lots of fun. So, that’s the real key focus,” said Walker.

The project is paid for in part by a donation from the Darwood Foundation. The group, associated with Doug and Kara French, and contributions from Stylecraft, gave $2,000,000 to be used for the playground.

“We wouldn’t be here today — certainly at this time — working on a playground without that donation. So they’ve just expedited that process so much for us,” said Walker.

The remaining $2,500,000 will be paid for by the city.

“We’re really trying to focus as much energy and dollars towards the play elements,” said Walker. “We want them to be quality, of course. We want this to be a playground for generations.”

According to the presentation, construction is set to begin in December 2024. Walker told KBTX they’re estimating construction will take about seven to eight months, with it being open for play sometime in late summer or fall of 2025.
