OnRamp hoping to raise funds to gift coach accessible vehicle
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – It’s been one year since Rudder High School football Coach Calvin Hill received a van courtesy of OnRamp to assist him after he was injured in the 2022 Santa’s Wonderland Bus crash.
OnRamp, a nonprofit that gifts vehicles to people on the road to self-sufficiency, gave Coach Hill the wheelchair-accessible van last year only a few months after he returned home post-recovery. The van allowed him to attend doctor appointments, get out of the house, and see friends.
Unfortunately, the ramp system in the van failed last month.
Coach Hill’s van is currently in service at Untied Access, a wheelchair-accessible van dealer in Bryan. OnRamp and United Access identified the failure of the ramp and recognized it was beyond repair. Now, OnRamp is raising funds for a new accessible vehicle.
“The vehicle itself is freedom. That’s what it means, it’s not about the vehicle, it is about the freedom that it provides for the family and Coach Hill deserves that and we’re excited to be a part of that,” said President and Founder of OnRamp, Blake Jennings.
Jennings said it was a no-brainer to secure the van for Coach Hill last June and now that the Hills are still under OnRamp’s 12-month care and free maintenance, they are more than happy to do it again.
“Coach Hill cares deeply about the students that he was able to coach, cares deeply about the community, about Rudder High School. He and his wife Sabrina are involved in the community in serval different ways and have been an example to the community,” said Jennings. “We need to find a vehicle and purchase a vehicle with a ramp that Calvin can utilize. Fortunately, we have found a vehicle, we just need to now pay for it.”
OnRamp is hoping to raise $15,000 in total to secure a new van to restore Coach Hill’s freedom.
“Calvin and Sabrina can’t go anywhere at the moment because the van is broken, so we would like to do this immediately,” said Jennings.
OnRamp is hoping to raise enough funds for the van as soon as possible so that Coach Hill can return to his daily activities.
They have raised $2,500 so far and are hoping to receive $12,500 more in donations.
