New report reveals College Station as top spot for retirees

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – As College Station grows, so does its retirement community. In a new report from the US Census Bureau, College Station was listed as one of the top five fastest-growing retirement populations in America.

In another article by Realtor.com, Texas is home to four cities in the top 10 where retirees are moving, including College Station.

Affordable housing and lower tax rates have made Aggieland a desirable place to live for retirement.

Local health care, retail, and entertainment were just a few reasons why 88-year-old Zanna Bickham decided to pack her bags and move from West Texas to College Station.

“We decided we needed to leave because we were isolated, and so we decided on four towns and College Station was one of them,” said Bickham.

After moving from place to place, Bickham said she needed to find somewhere to settle down. College Station quickly became her top choice after visiting and falling in love with the location and community.

“It’s a very friendly place,” Bickham vouched. “You don’t have to go very far to get the things you want.”

With hospitals, shopping centers, and fun activities nearby, College Station was the perfect choice for someone looking for a relaxed way of life.

“It’s wonderful,” assured Bickham. “Especially when you had to drive 165 miles to get to a major doctor or hospital. The medical facilities in College Station are great. I don’t have to go to other places most of the time.”

The Langford Retirement Community said it noticed increasing numbers of applicants at the facility over the past few years.

“We have been at 100% for the last year plus,” sales counselor Lisa Miller shared. “We’ve been open for six years. I would say, as we were ramping up and moving folks in, we became full quite quickly.”

Miller went as far as to say she wasn’t surprised College Station made it on the top 10 list.

“Individuals don’t have to suffer a lot of bad traffic, they don’t have to go too far to get to any retail store, theater, marketplace of any kind,” added Miller. “Honestly, the people are genuinely happy in this type of environment. It’s very pleasant.”

As the retirement population continues to grow, several new senior living communities such as Woodland Cottages and Lakeside at Millican Reserve are under development to ensure everyone can live out their retirement in College Station.
