Navasota water well tests positive for E. coli
NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) – A water well sample from Navasota tested positive for E. coli bacteria on Friday, according to the City of Navasota Public Water System. The city says drinking water remains safe to consume.
The city says the well was immediately removed from use and will remain shut down until it tests negative for the bacteria. The city estimates that will take about 10 days.
“Water from the wells is disinfected with chlorine at the water treatment plant prior to distribution,” Navasota officials said in a press release. “Currently, all distribution samples are in compliance and drinking water is safe to consume by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.”
At this time, boiling water is not required.
The water system tests for fecal indicators like E. coli because they can make people sick, especially infants, children, and people with weakened immune systems. Anyone with questions is encouraged to call Mattew Julian, Chief Water Operator, at 936-825-6450.
