Murphy’s Law reopens in Downtown Bryan

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Murphy’s Law in Downtown Bryan is reopened after being temporarily closed this week.

On Tuesday the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts gave the Irish pub a notice of seizure. A spokesperson from the Comptroller’s Office told KBTX that the business owed more than $250,000 in unpaid taxes and fees. KBTX learned it wasn’t the first time the agency had taken action against them. Brazos County records show a lien filed in July of 2023 for an estimated $17,000 in unpaid taxes.

The pub’s general manager, Kat Deno said the situation came as a shock to the staff and because the owner lives in Germany communication is “very few and far between.”

“The owner really has nothing to do with stuff beyond those payments here so for the rest of us who are just doing the day-to-day operations we were terrified. we weren’t sure what was going to happen which is why no one really heard anything from us because I didn’t want to give any misinformation,” Deno said.

A spokesperson for the Comptroller’s Office told KBTX on Tuesday that they were taking ‘available collection actions’ against Murphy’s Law for the unpaid taxes. If the owner failed to pay the property would be seized and sold to cover the debt.

Deno said on Thursday that the pub is back open after being closed on Tuesday and Wednesday and they have no plans to close again for the foreseeable future.

“When everything went down we still weren’t sure what was happening,” Deno said. “As far as I understand he has taken care of everything and we are clear to operate. Please come by and see us. Again our staff here are amazing and I don’t want this situation to detriment them in any way shape or form. We love this community and I know a lot of people in this community love us.”

Those who have scheduled events with Murphy’s Law will still be able to have them there, Deno said.

“Those parties are good to go we are fully operational, and nobody has anything to worry about with that, and if I for one second believed that they did I would be reaching out to them ASAP so we can get them covered and taken care of,” Deno said.
