MS 150 seeking volunteers for Kyle Field finish line

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – The MS 150 cycling event needs more volunteers to help at the finish line celebration in Kyle Field.

Bike MS is a charity cycling event that raises money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s efforts in empowerment and research for people with Multiple Sclerosis. The event will be from April 27 to April 28.

“It takes over 2,000 volunteers across all of our communities to come together to help make the event happen, “ said Andrew Davis, Senior Specialist of Volunteer Engagement for the National MS Society. “We only have about 80 or so staff members in the state of Texas, and we’re anticipating anywhere between 5,000 to 6,000 riders to hit the road this weekend. Almost 250 of those volunteers, if we get all of our shifts filled, will be there at our Kyle Field finish line.”

Bike MS is the seventh largest charity cycling event in the country, according to the National MS Society website. Over 50,000 cyclists take part in their biking events across the country each year, with each participant raising funds for the organization.

“Our goal for this year is $9.4 million, and we’ve already exceeded $7 million of that amount,” said Davis. “Fundraising is open until the end of July. So even after the event, people used the excitement of the weekend to keep the momentum going and we’re very optimistic.”

A variety of volunteering roles and times are available for anyone wanting to volunteer on either day of the event, said Davis. Volunteers will be given a volunteer t-shirt, lunch, a special Aggieland Outfitters 12th man towel and a chance to celebrate with the cyclists in Kyle Field.

“Our volunteers are a huge help for us and we’re definitely incredibly grateful for every individual that dons our blue volunteer shirt and gets out there to help out that day,” said Davis. “They’re really there to help us kind of roll out the maroon carpet and welcome our riders in at the end of the race as it’s our ultimate finish line there.”

This year the festivities will even reach Aggie Park, where people can continue the celebration.

“We’re kind of branching out and taking over a portion of Aggie Park there right across the road from Kyle Field where we’ll have a lot of fun activities like games for kids, we’ll have a biergarten over there, [and] we’ll have some live music,” said Davis.

Volunteer sign ups will be accepted until the day of the event. To sign up for a volunteering position or to ask about volunteering opportunities, contact the Volunteer Engagement Team at 713-394-2931 or email the team at VolunteerTexasMS150@nmss.org.
