Meet the Candidate: Steve Aldrich – Brazos County Commissioner, Pct. 1

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Early voting begins later this morning, and one race some Brazos County voters will see on their ballot is the Precinct 1 Commissioners seat.

Three candidates are vying for the Republican nomination: Steve Aldrich (Incumbent), Karl Mooney and Bentley Nettles.

Precinct 3, Nancy Berry (Incumbent) and Fred Brown are vying for the Republican nomination.

All the candidates will appear on News 3 at Six this week.

Steve Aldrich joined News 3 at Six on Thursday to discuss why he believes he should take the seat.

“I think the experience says a lot. What we’ve been able to accomplish. What I look forward to us accomplishing in the future, makes a big difference,” Aldrich said. “I am all about smart, responsible and proactive growth. We are growing very rapidly as a community we need to meet the needs of the growth but we also need to make sure we are responsible for the people who pay for that. Our taxpayers.”

During Aldrich’s time on the court so far, he hasn’t always seen eye to eye with other commissioners. In 2022, Aldrich and former commissioner Russ Ford skipped meetings to avoid taking a vote that Aldrich believed would hurt taxpayers. His opponents have criticized him for the move and instead said the two commissioners should have shown up to debate the issue. Aldrich says he stands by his decision.

“A lot of people said we took a bold stance, well I don’t think it was bold, it was just the right thing to do,” Aldrich said. “The result of that, by not allowing Brazos County to increase property taxes, was a $20 million surplus during that year. So obviously that tells me there was need for Brazos County to increase your taxes was there?”

Aldrich says he continues to run because there is still a lot to do.

“I am excited about the opportunity, should the voters decide to still have me do it, to be there on their behalf,” Aldrich said.
