Meet the Candidate: S.A. Smith – Robertson County Sheriff
ROBERTSON COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) – Early voting is underway and one race Robertson County voters will see on their ballot is County Sheriff.
All six candidates will appear on News 3 at Six before election day on March 5.
Gerald Yezak has held the position since 1996, but he is not running for reelection. Six candidates are vying for the position: Karen Box, Rip Brown, Johnny Lopez, Bill Ruland, S.A. Smith and Miguel Vasquez.
Smith joined News 3 at Six on Monday to discuss why he believes he’s the right person for the job.
“I’ve got 34 years of law enforcement experience,” Smith said. “I’ve been the rank of Lieutenant over one department over CID and over patrol. I’ve been the Chief Deputy of another department so I know the day-to-day operations and what it takes to oversee it. I’ve been here with the sheriff’s office almost 13 years, and I’ve been the deputy that’s been out there at night covering every inch of that 854 square miles so I know what needs to be done, I’ve seen what goes on and I know what needs to be changed.”
Smith says he hopes to tackle issues he has seen firsthand within the county.
”I plan to take some positions and put them on the streets so we have more deputies on the streets,” Smith said. “I plan to make sure the cases get into the DA’s office, they’re investigated, they’re completed and into the DA’s office in a timely fashion. I plan to address the ever-growing drug problem that we have in Robertson County and attempt to curb that.”
