Meet the Candidate: Jarvis Parson – Brazos County District Attorney

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Early voting is now underway in Texas. One race Brazos County voters will see on their ballot is District Attorney.

Jarvis Parsons currently holds the role and is running for reelection. He only has one challenger: Maritza Sifuentez-Chavarria.

Mr. Parsons joined News 3 at Six on Monday to discuss why he believes he should be reelected.

“Well, I think there is more work that needs to be done,” Parsons said. “I have been a prosecutor here for 21 years, 11.5 as the District Attorney here in Brazos County. I have had the chance to see everything and try every kind of case or prosecute every kind of case from thefts all the way up to capital murder. But I think that we want to make sure we keep Brazos County safe. I like to tell people all the time the DA’s office is not the thing that makes Brazos County the place to come. We want to make people feel safe, and then as people feel safe, they bring their businesses here, they bring their families here.”

Parsons says his experience helps him figure out how to try and prosecute the most serious cases.

“We live in a great community, the problem is sometimes people come into our community and commit awful acts of crime,” Parsons said. “You need someone with experience who’s handed those cases before to be able to go in, show the prosecutors how to make that happen, to make sure they go and train them up. But also, when the worst of the worst cases come through you are able to go in and exercise justice.”

Parsons’ slogan is “Tough on crime when it counts the most”.

“We have increased prosecution of our murder cases from 40 years with my predecessor, to up to 52 years,” Parsons said. “The average sentence in TDC right now in prison is 33 years for murder. We are 60 percent above the average for people in Texas.”
