Meet the Candidate: Ben Bius – Texas House District 12
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Early voting starts in almost two weeks.
One race some Brazos Valley voters will see on their ballot is Texas House District 12. This week on News 3 at Six, we are getting to know the candidates who want to represent District 12 in Austin, which includes Robertson, Madison, Walker, Grimes, Washington, and the eastern and southern portions of Brazos County.
Kyle Kacal currently holds the District 12 chair. In November, he announced he would not seek reelection in 2024. Three Republicans are running in hopes of filling his seat: Ben Bius, Trey Wharton, and John Harvey Slocum.
Bius joined News 3 at Six on Wednesday to discuss why he believes he should take the seat.
“Well two years ago I ran in this race against an incumbent and very narrowly lost. I focused on the issues and the record… I know this District better than anybody alive and I believe I can serve this entire District quite well,” Bius said. “I think that’s very important in a district like this. It’s a rural District. It has five counties plus about half of Brazos, and they’re for the most part rural. I often say I’ll represent more cows than people.”
When it comes to school vouchers, Bius says he is “for the teacher.”
“I quite frankly haven’t read the bill on school vouchers because we’re going to have a big argument over that and I was very disgusted this summer, almost didn’t run because of the impeachment, and because of the four special sessions. I thought it was poor judgment to call them. Because of the environment the impeachment occurred, there was very little going to get done.”
Bius’ slogan is “Let’s Take Back Texas”.
“Take back Texas from the federal government and education. Take back Texas. Take back our border,” Bius said. “The border is a huge issue. It’s going to impact our sheriffs. It’s going to impact our schools. It’s going to impact our healthcare system.”
