Marine One helicopter moved into new space at George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Tuesday marked a milestone for the George and Barbara Bush Foundation Centennial Commemoration.
A helicopter used by President George H.W. Bush is now calling College Station its permanent home.
“It’s pretty special to get one that was retired that actually flew the president around so it took us a while to get that,” CEO of the George and Barbara Bush Foundation, Andy Card said. “We are very grateful to the U.S. Navy and the Marine Corps for helping to get it and helping to pay for it to get here. We have to remember that they made a big donation just to be able to give us the helicopter that they have here.”
The 72-foot-long aircraft was used frequently by the former president and first lady. It will be placed alongside the 4141 locomotive inside a new 29,00 square foot expansion.
”I am most excited about showing a part of the presidency that we don’t really think about often,” Dawn Hammat the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library & Museum Director said. “We think about the specific things that he did but with this, we get to talk about all the travels that he did in order to get those jobs done. What happened on Marine One, who was with him, what did they talk about perhaps?”
The new expanded space is on pace to open in June to coincide with what would have been George H.W. Bush’s 100th birthday.
