International Women’s Day: Bryan native adding creative touch to Brazos Valley, beyond

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – March is Women’s History Month, and Friday is International Women’s Day.

It’s a time to celebrate women’s achievements, perspectives and contributions to the world.

In the Brazos Valley, several women are working to leave their mark in their own way.

One is Ashley Morehead, a Bryan native and co-owner of Double Vision. It’s a business offering graphic design and chain stitching services.

“Old bowling shirts or work wear, that embroidery was done on a chain stitch machine, so there’s no computers,” Morehead said. “It’s all manually done. There’s a handle under here. There’s a peddle and you steer the needle with the handle and you can essentially draw with the machine.”

Morehead’s machine is from the 60′s, and she got it in June 2022 not knowing how to use it.

“I would just get felt, and I would write all the state names,” Morehead said. “I would write all the military phonetics. I would just write everything out and practice, practice, practice.”

She now adds her flair to a variety of things like jackets, bags and banners. Each offers a one-of-a-kind look.

“It’s going to look handmade, Morehead said.” Nothing is going to look exactly the same so even if I do like five jackets that all have the same design, it’s all going to look unique.”

Before discovering her passion for chain stitching, Morehead thought she’d be a chemistry teacher.

“I found this, and I was like oh, we gotta do this,” Morehead said. “We gotta make something out of this and even if the chain stitching doesn’t last forever, I do think that there’s still ways to keep being creative and keep being a boss.”

The entrepreneur said the journey has taught her to be fearless.

“I just jumped into it,” Morehead said. “I mean, there are a couple of videos online that, kind of, will walk you through some stuff but nothing crazy helpful. You just have to do it.”

That’s also her message to aspiring female entrepreneurs.

“You’re gonna mess up,” Morehead said. “You’re gonna be really, really nervous. You’re probably gonna have a lot of anxiety and not sleep a couple of nights because that’s what happens to me often, but it’s so rewarding to be able to do what you wanna do everyday.”
