Inaugural chili cook-off raises money for Brazos County first responders
KURTEN, Texas (KBTX) – The Brazos County First Responders Association held its inaugural Chili Cook-Off on Saturday.
20 teams joined the fun in Kurten where leaders say the support for first responders and their families is vital.
“We provide assistance for First Responders in the times of need. sometimes that they’re injured in the line of duty or if they become ill, we’re able to reach out and provide them some immediate assistance like that,” Trey Oldham, a Board Member for the association said.
The teams showed off their best cooking skills batching up chili and sharing the tasty competition with attendees.
“We’ve got teams from Go Texan. We’ve got Operation Safe Shield. We’ve got a lot of just smaller teams that have been put together, folks come out and cook, the City of Wixon Valley, a lot of different folks,” Oldham said.
The teams faced off Saturday but those participating say it was more friendly than competition as the groups focused on the real reason they were there.
“We’re supporting our Brazos Valley First Responders. I mean, that’s what we do. We’re supporting all first responders through Backing the Badge and Operation Safe Shield. So we just thought it is important to come show our support and cook some chili and help raise some money for the first responders,” Clifford Dorn, the President of Operation Safe Shield, said.
Not only did they have the cook-off, but local vendors showed up and there was plenty of things to keep kids entertained.
“It’s nice to see that the community and these groups come out and support our organization and it’s great to be able to interact with the community and these different groups as First Responders. So it’s great to see the support,” Oldham said.
