HeathPoint connects Brazos Valley residents with resources at Community Health Fair

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – In honor of National Health Center Week, HealthPoint held a Community Health Fair in Bryan on Thursday.

The week, held annually in August, showcases the care provided by Community Health Centers like HealthPoint.

Also known as Federally Qualified Health Centers, these are organizations that welcome everyone, including low-income, uninsured, or underinsured patients.

“We search the patients who need us,” said HealthPoint Manager of Outreach and Enrollment Dora Vazquez. “We look for people who don’t have access to insurance, either because they can’t afford it or don’t qualify for it, and we give them the same quality health care that other individuals can afford.”

Community Health Centers can provide care at a discounted cost through support from the federal government.

“When we’re out in the community, you’re not just doing a job, you’re not just providing the service. You’re the access point. You’re the one that makes it happen,” said Vazquez. “I get chills when I talk about it. You give that individual that didn’t have blood pressure medication, that didn’t have a primary care doctor, you give them that access.”

The Community Health Fair was held from 1 to 5 p.m. at HealthPoint’s Bryan location on Memorial Drive. There was family fun like cornhole and snow cones, but also education and resources.

“Today specifically, we’re focusing on Patient Appreciation Day. Our providers have been gracious to allow us to add extra Well Child Checks,” said HealthPoint Operations Manager Roman Martinez. “Along with those Well Child Checks, to all school-age patients, we’re giving out backpacks and goodie bags.”

People were also connected with other programs and organizations in the community.
