Grimes County recovering from Sunday storms
BEDIAS, Texas (KBTX) – National Weather Service Meteorologists surveyed storm damage near Bedias and confirmed an EF-1 tornado.
After the tornado touched down northwest of Bedias, a few houses were left with roof damage and two houses reported flooding from the storm.
A bridge on County Road 157 is also significantly damaged and now closed, and will need to be replaced.
David Lilly, the Grimes County Emergency Management Services Coordinator, says County Road 115 took a hit from the storm where several trees were damaged as a result of strong wind and heavy rain.
Lilly also says a few roads were washed out, including Bankhead Drive.
The company 5G LLC, or ‘Fix Our Darrell Hall Road,’ is repairing the road and adding a new culvert.
“There’s two old pieces of pipe essentially in the ground right now that have collapsed and we’re going to have to pull them out with a big Track-O, a big piece of machinery. Then we have a new one that’s coming in that is 8 feet tall so we could walk through that one and it’s going to get laid down in the whole then covered back up,” said Chase Cammack, with 5G LLC.
Lilly says Grimes County is grateful the damage wasn’t worse.
“Overall, we were very fortunate with the tornado part of the storm, it did not cause any significant damage to any homes, but there were some with moderate damage,” said Lilly.
The National Weather Service’s Warning Coordination Meteorologist Dan Reilly came to Bedias to asses the path and intensity of the storm.
Reilly says he would classify the storm that hit the area as an EF-1 tornado.
“It was certainly what we call a supercell storm, rotating thunderstorm bringing all that heavy rain, strong wind, and a few tornadoes,” said Reilly. “A lot of large limbs down, a few trees uprooted, pretty much along route 115 here along Grimes County, seems to be tracking pretty close north-south kind of track. Still have a lot more damage to look at but that’s what we’ve seen so far.”
This is one of two tornados the National Weather Service has assessed in the past 2 days. The other was reported in Trinity County.
