From the Ground Up: The importance of knowing where your food comes from
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – John Jones of Lochow Ranch grew up in a large family that valued the importance of self-reliance. These values stuck with Jones, and eventually fueled a passion project that would grow into a teaching tool for generations to come.
What started as a pasture in Milam County over a decade ago, has blossomed into an educational garden geared toward teaching kids about agriculture and where their food comes from. Over the years, Jones and his family have poured countless hours into the garden and they say, “for the last nine years, it’s been a continuous improvement”.
This Milam County pasture has sprouted into a successful garden full of diverse produce, however, the goal stretches far beyond soil and seed. Jones believes “this garden is going to be responsible for dozens if not hundreds of gardens in the future”.
Producing food at any capacity requires effort, but Jones believes that if people see the ins and outs of gardening from an early age, they will learn the joy of knowing exactly where their food comes from.
