Friends of the Wheelock School House awarded $100K to restore historic building

WHEELOCK, Texas (KBTX) – Friends of the Wheelock School House recently won the Michael C. Duda award and $100,000 to continue restoring the building.

“So many people told us when we said we wanted to restore the building that it couldn’t be done, I’m proud to say that it can be done and we are getting it done,” said Secretary Kathy Hedrick.

The school, which stopped being used as a traditional learning space in the 1950s, has remained in operation as a community center.

“It’s being used for community events, we’ve actually had weddings on the grounds outside and we want to offer more,” added Hedrick.

The group’s plan for the funds is to completely redo the outside of the schoolhouse first then move inside.
