Free Music Friday: Oliver Penn
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Although he is from Rhode Island, Oliver Penn made his way to the Lone Star State before starting high school.
When he isn’t on the road, he’s in the studio writing music that celebrates blues, country and soul.
Penn said he started off when he was young, when his parents tried to encourage him on a bit of a different musical path.
“My parents really pushed me to go into piano lessons. I always wanted to play guitar and drums and everything else. But it definitely paid off because it allowed me to play the other instruments as well,” he said.
He performed his new song, “It’s Just Two Steps,” for First News at Four on Friday, and he said the title was debated quite a bit during production.
“We were calling it ‘The Dance Hall Song,’ ‘King of the Dance Hall,” and then people would come up to us and ask ‘Hey, what’s the name of that two-step song?’ and so we ended up letting the people name it,” Penn said.
