Former NASA astronaut discusses watching eclipse from space
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – It’s a phenomenon that won’t happen again until 2044: a total solar eclipse.
The moon will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun, casting a shadow across some parts of the United States, including parts of the Brazos Valley.
Former NASA astronaut Terry Virts joined News 3 at Six Tuesday to discuss how to view the eclipse safely.
“You don’t want to go out and stare at the sun, you’ll damage your vision permanently, which is not really great,” he said.
Commander Virts has seen a solar eclipse from space.
“It was amazing. It was unexpected. I was on the space station in 2015 and we knew there was gonna be an eclipse in the North Atlantic. We weren’t sure if we could see it because we passed pretty far away and as we went over the Atlantic, we looked out and sure enough, you could see this big black dark spot,” Virts said. “It was really surreal. It was something that I had not ever seen and have not seen since. It was a very amazing experience. “
