Focus at Four: Staying healthy during a winter freeze
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The weather in the Brazos Valley recently has created many challenges, impacting businesses, roads, and schools.
Experts say the cold weather could even impact your health.
Dr. Jason McKnight, a clinical professor at the Department of Primary Care and Rural Medicine at Texas A&M, joined First News at Four today to discuss what we can do to avoid illness during the frigid weather.
McKnight said that eating well is of course one way to be proactive, but he also mentioned that the siren call of stationary activities should be avoided.
“If you’re sitting around at home, your power’s out or you’re not going outside for a long period of time, get up. Move around your house, take a walk, so you’re not sitting there the entire time doing nothing,” said McKnight.
McKnight also emphasized the importance of safe heat sources and said to make sure you know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Symptoms include:
HeadachesWeaknessDizzinessNausea or vomitingConfusionDrowsiness
And more.
If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, McKnight said the best course of action is to call local authorities and exit the premises.
