Focus at Four: Local Pediatric Provider discusses safe sleep for infants
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A concerning and growing number of reports have been made to the federal government of babies who have died wearing weighted sleepwear.
This includes products like sleep sacks and swaddles.
Britni Lehde, a pediatric provider with HealthPoint, said that while newborns are allowed to be swaddled, once they’re able to roll on their sides, things change.
“We only suggest that they wear just regular pajamas, the infant pajamas but with no stuffed animals, no blankets, nothing inside the crib at all,” she said.
Lehde mentioned that the danger of weighted sleepwear is harming breathing ability.
“It can affect their respirations and their breathing. Every infant has a different weight. So you don’t know if that infant is ten pounds, fifteen pounds, twenty pounds, and you’re putting that same size weighted item on them. It could affect their breathing,” she said.
When asked about the recommended weight safe for a child while sleeping, Lehde said none is best.
“We don’t recommend any.”
