Focus at Four: Local doctor on the importance of Cancer Prevention Month
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – February is Cancer Prevention Month in the United States, and the illness can be overwhelming to think about.
But, there are ways you can stay healthy, and lower your chances of catching the disease.
Dr. Jamie Pawlowski from St. Joseph Health joined First News at Four on Monday and says that a lot of the battle is a stationary lifestyle.
“Per the American Cancer Society, the recommendations are at least 30 minutes five times a week of some moderate intensity physical activity, limit sedentary behavior and following a healthy eating pattern,” she said.
Pawlowski mentioned that modeling healthy habits for kids can make a difference in their future.
“In general, we see that it starts in adolescence, and with children. This is where those healthy lifestyle changes begin, with at least one hour of vigorous activity each day.
Pawlowski also said that asking questions at the doctor’s office can save some worry for you if you have a family history of cancer and have a concern.
“You should talk to your doctor if you have any family history of cancer or even any personal concerns. Your doctor should be aware of the most up-to-date screening guidelines, which depending on your age, lifestyle factors and family history can vary from person to person. But you can screen for breast cancer, colon cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer – all of these can be screened via various methods,” she said.
