Focus at Four: How to stay safe in the summer heat

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – With all the outdoor activities this weekend, it is important to remember that safety is an important part of having fun at these events.

It’s also the beginning of the summer and it’s only going to get hotter in the next couple of months.

Amanda Dominguez, a registered nurse and director of nursing with HealthPoint joined First News at Four on Friday to discuss safety.

She said that a huge part of staying safe in heat is hydration.

“You really want to make sure you’re drinking plenty of water. Sometimes people are taking medications that may be causing them dehydration,” said Dominguez.

You also want to ensure you know the symptoms of heat-related illnesses, so you can catch it early.

“Some of the first symptoms that you might experience if you’re feeling kind of heat exhausted is dizziness or wanting to faint, extreme thirst, you might have a rapid heart rate,” she said.

Also, ensure you keep an eye on younger patients and the elderly.

“Our youngest patients and our more elderly population are actually at higher risk for heat exhaustion just because of their medications. And so that can also affect how their bodies respond to heat. But also they’re less likely to consume fluids,” she said.
