Focus at Four: How to practice National Heart Health Awareness Month all year long

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – It is National Heart Health Awareness Month, and with Valentine’s Day coming up, our minds are on our hearts.

A nurse practitioner from Baylor Scott & White, Danielle Smith, joined First News at Four Wednesday. She said heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, but it is the little changes that make a difference.

“Simply having an exercise regimen, and making sure you make good diet choices and food choices are two of the easiest things that you can do,” she said.

Smith also said even a small amount of exercise can improve your heart health for the future.

“Even something as simple as walking three to five times a week, up to thirty minutes at a time can really benefit the heart,” she said.

Smith mentioned that when it comes to your heart health and smoking, “There are lots of resources out there, I would start with your primary care provider, simply going to see them, and talking about the options for what’s going to be best for that patient to quit. And even something as simple as reducing your cigarettes by one a day until you see your primary and you’ve already made a big difference.”
