Focus at Four: Brazos County elections official explains ‘voter suspended list’
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – At three months to Election Day, a report showing a figure of more than 2 million Texans on the state’s suspended voter list has some concerned. A Brazos County elections official says it’s nothing to worry about, but something to look into.
According to a new report from the Dallas Morning News, 2.1 million Texas voters are on the state’s suspended list, only three months before the Presidential Election.
Trudy Hancock, the Elections Administrator for Brazos County, said it is a list that affects people who do not have updated information with their voter registration.
“You can always check the Secretary of State’s website, they have an ‘am I registered to vote’ [section] and it will also tell you if you’re active or in suspense. Or, you can call the office and we’re happy to look it up for you and let you know, and then to advise you what you need to do to get that updated,” Hancock said.
If you are on the suspended list, Hancock recommended visiting the Brazos County Election Administration office at 300 West William Joel Bryan Parkway in Bryan. There, you can fill out an application to become a valid registered voter ahead of Election Day.
“It’s the same application you fill out to get registered, but all it does is give us permission to change your address and update that so that way you can vote for the candidates that will be representing you,” explained Hancock.
Right now, Election Day is 90 days out but Hancock said voters need to make sure they’re in good standing at least 30 days before the day.
“Be sure to come in if you’re an incoming student and want to register. Please do that at your earliest convenience. Students can maintain their residence and their registration at their home address, so they’re not required just because they live here to move that, but just check and make sure that, you know, everything is as it should be,” Hancock added.
