Exclusive: City of Bryan’s police chief to retire this summer
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The City of Bryan’s police chief tells KBTX he will step down from his role in June and looks forward to retirement.
“I’m retiring effective June 7th,” Chief Eric Buske confirmed to News 3′s Rusty Surette and Katie Aupperle on Thursday during News 3 at 6.
“The first thing I’m going to do is take a breath and relax, and then I think my wife, Deb, and I are going to do some traveling and just spend more time with the grandkids and the kids.”
Chief Buske has been the city’s top lawman since September of 2009 but has served nearly 40 years in law enforcement including 25 years at the Omaha, Nebraska Police Department before moving to Bryan for the job as police chief.
“I really like my job, but at some point, you have to say, ‘I’ve worked enough and it’s time to do something different.’ I’ve been considering it for probably two years now about what my timeline would be, and as time passed, it just became a little more specific.”
Chief Buske says he does have plans to move back to his hometown of Omaha but will return frequently to Aggieland to visit his grandson who is attending Texas A&M University.
As far as finding a new leader, that’s something the city will be tasked with doing, and Chief Buske is confident they’ll make the right choice.
“Our city has good leadership and I know they recognize the police department has good leadership, so I think they’ll have some choices to make and they can make good ones,” he said.
Some of Buske’s career highlights at the Bryan Police Department included launching a mental health division and outfitting all officers with body-worn cameras. He expands on this in our interview, which you can watch by clicking on the video player above.
