Crisis Averted: 4th of July Kurten Fireworks Show officially on

KURTEN, Texas (KBTX) – A paperwork issue almost changed the beloved Kurten Fireworks Show on Thursday.

The annual 4th of July Kurten Fireworks show has a new host, Shane Savage with Savage Outdoor & Defense, as of this year after the Volunteer Fire Department could no longer host it.

The fireworks show is still on for this Thursday. However, there was a slight hiccup in the insurance paperwork for the event.

Savage told KBTX the word “landowners” was not specifically stated in the insurance paperwork causing concern among community members and everyone who was involved in the show.

The fireworks are launched on a landowner’s property behind the Kurten Community Center’s fence line. The landowners were upset the word “landowner” was not included in the paperwork since the fireworks would be launched on their property.

“They were worried about being covered in the insurance because landowners was not specifically stated,” said Savage. “It wasn’t forgotten, it just was just never included in that contract specifically, and they wanted it explicitly stated.”

Savage and the fireworks company worked together to make sure contracts were good to go, keeping the tradition intact.

“There was one minor misunderstanding over one singular word and we got it all taken care of and it’s all squared away now,” said Savage.

Ron Weiman with the Community Center said no matter what, Kurten wasn’t going without fireworks on Thursday night.

They had a backup plan in place that if the issue was not resolved, the fireworks would be launched 100 feet away on a different property. Since the issue was resolved, the fireworks will still be launched in the original spot.

“We did have a Plan B and it was going to happen,” said Weiman. “It was going to go on, whether we had a little hiccup, but we resolved that.”

Savage says all issues have been resolved and the show will go on as normal on Thursday.

The gates at Kurten Community Center Association will open at 5 p.m. and the show will begin at 9 p.m.

There will be a gun raffle, food trucks, yard games, and a bounce house.

A local artist, Molly McDonald, will sing the national anthem and there will be a livestream of the show on the event’s Facebook page, here.

Local community members are excited about this year’s staple show.

“I’m about five minutes down the road, so closer here. But the show itself, the event, all my friends come here, everybody is local, everybody I know is here, and I don’t think I’d trade this show for any other one,” said Kurten resident Layten Arnold.
