Common misconceptions of SNAP benefits with Brazos Valley Food Bank

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Misinformation is a common issue for many government benefit programs.

This includes beneficial systems such as SNAP, better known as food stamps.

Theresa Mangapora with the Brazos Valley Food Bank joined First News at Four to dispel the myth from fact.

She says many people assume that those who use SNAP benefits are on them for life. The reality is that those who use SNAP are on average using them for only 9 months.

Mangapora also said that, according to a study by the USDA, 55% of people who use SNAP benefits are employed.

“The next two highest categories are folks that are disabled and people who are retired. One of the smallest categories are those who are unemployed,” she said.
