College Station code enforcement clears homeless encampment in Wolf Pen Creek area
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Wednesday KBTX captured photos of the City of Colleg eStation clearing our a homeless encampment in the Wolf Pen Creek area.
Cases like this are handled by code enforcement officials, who said they were made aware of the camp by the College Station Fire Department.
The fire department reported large amounts of trash and several abandoned shopping carts.
Tommy Shilling, code enforcement supervisor for the City of College Station, said the agency quickly cleaned out the trash, and managed to return the shopping carts to the businesses they belonged to.
”The chief concern was the accumulation of trash because it is a lot that has a lot of trees on it, and that accumulation of trash started to spill out into the public right of way,” Shilling said.
Twin City Mission director of community relations Ron Crozier said they have resources available to help those living in the encampment.
”We work proactively to help make the community more aware of who we are and what we offer so that when the situation arises now, they’ve got a resources or someone they can turn to,” he said.
The nonprofit offers a bed to sleep in, three meals a day, and case management staff to help those in need get back on their feet. You can find more resources here.
