City of Bryan holds grand opening for sand volleyball court

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Despite some chilly weather Saturday morning, people still came out to celebrate the City of Bryan’s brand new sand volleyball court at Legends Event Center.

The sand volleyball court is the newest addition to Legends Event Center and the growing Midtown Park area. It features four courts and holds over 1,300 tons of sand. There is also a green space for those to watch the games.

“The City of Bryan has always had this vision of incorporating it within the Midtown Park, more than just Legends Event Center, so what are some other activities that everyone in the community can enjoy and sand volleyball was one of the ideas,” Legends Event Center General Manager Jamie Cox said.

There will be sand volleyball tournaments, along with sand soccer and tennis events that Legends expects will bring in people from not just the community, but from all over.

“They’re going to come in for a day trip from Austin or from Houston and come play in a one-day tournament or maybe a league play or just open opportunities to come and enjoy, not just the sand here at Legends Event Center, but other activities within midtown park and the City of Bryan,” Cox said.

People already had the chance to kick up some sand during the grand opening tournament.

“Incredibly excited that this is open, not only is it for volleyball but I saw corn hole, basketball, and there is a little soccer court over there,” said competitor Alex Braddock. “My friend knows the event planner and she signed us up for it. it’s a super awesome facility.”

Cox said that Legends has been looking forward to the court for over a year and now that it’s open everyone can enjoy the sand for five dollars a person.

“It’s so great to see all these different kids and adults sharing space together, having a good time, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for these sand volleyball courts,” Cox said.
