Caution on roadways needed as flood waters continue to rise

MADISON COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) – Rain has caused flooding across the Brazos Valley, closing some roadways to traffic.

In Madison County, FM 39 from FM 1452 to 978 was closed down Wednesday due to flooding. Madison County Emergency Management Coordinator, Shelly Butts, says the county was lucky with only some field and roadways flooding so far.

She said drivers face the most danger.

“We’re just wanting everybody just please use extreme caution and especially when it starts to get dark and you really can’t see the water over the road,” Butts said. “FM 39 has a temporary closure right now between 1452 and 978. We may see some more of those coming as the night progresses since we are looking at more rain coming.”

Bob Colwell with TxDOT Bryan says they have crews ready to respond just like they did around Madison County Wednesday.

“FM 39, that roadway is under construction, and with all the water that we’ve got it’s washed away a lot of the base. So we had to go out there and shut that road,” he said.

Colwell says they have to wait until the rain passes to begin much of the work they need to do. That means after the water stops rising, they still have to wait.

“We will be receiving more water along our rivers in areas and I anticipate that we will get a blunt of the flooding later this week and into the weekend,” he said. “Once that’s done, unfortunately, our work is not done. It’s just beginning and then we will be repairing and patching roadways.”

If you come across roadway flooding in Madison County this can be reported to 911. TxDOT reports can be made at (979) 778-8254.
