Bryan man sentenced to 30 years after sexually assaulting woman with Down syndrome
BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – A Bryan man convicted of sexually assaulting an adult woman with Down syndrome and giving her a sexually transmitted disease has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The 29-year-old survivor was confirmed to have been sexually assaulted during a visit to her doctor after experiencing genital pain in 2022, prosecutors said. After she was confirmed to have the STD at the doctor’s office, she said it was Henry Craig Tates who had sexually assaulted her and he was later confirmed to have the same STD.
After being confronted with test results, prosecutors say Tates admitted to the attacks.
“Taking advantage of this young woman is disgraceful. Protecting her and others from his predatory nature is our honor,” said Assistant District Attorneys Kristin Burns and Ryan Golden in a statement.
Investigators Mike Johse and Victim Assistance Coordinator Mandie James also assisted with securing this conviction.
Editor’s note: Many details of this case have been left out of this report to protect the survivor’s identity.
