Bryan Fire Department talks about health and wellness program

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – The City of Bryan wants to keep its firefighters mentally and physically fit so they can keep residents safe.

In February 2023, the city approved a three year contract to facilitate a Health and Wellness initiative.

Heart disease and other cardiac issues have long been recognized as significant health risks for firefighters.

“Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of firefighter fatalities, followed very closely by (mental health) suicide,” according Bryan fire department assistant chief of operations Jason Nored.

Through the program, Bryan firefighters are provided with health and wellness advice, on-site physical therapy, injury risk assessment, nutrition and exercise coaching and tactical yoga training.

“We do meditation, yoga, breathwork to help the guys reset and understand where their mind is at,” Bryan fire department health and wellness director Greg Propst said.

Chief Nored added they hope to expand the health and wellness program to Bryan police officers and BTU lineman in the future.
