Bryan, College Station ISDs see increased absences the day of the eclipse

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Across North America, people made an event of watching the total solar eclipse.

Many Brazos Valley school districts had eclipse viewing parties for their students on Monday, but it appears some families wanted to spend the historic event together.

KBTX reached out to College Station ISD and Bryan ISD to see how many absences there were on the day of the eclipse.

Bryan ISD reported 2,898.5 absences on Monday, April 8. Students who attend a half-day count as 0.5 for an absence. For context, on the previous Friday, the district had 954.5 absences. That’s nearly 2,000 more absent students on the day of the eclipse compared to Friday.

College Station ISD said 12,137 students attended their schools on Monday. On Friday, April 5, total attendance was at 13,597. That means over 1,400 more students were absent the day of the eclipse compared to Friday.

Texans won’t see another total solar eclipse until April 8, 2044.
