Brazos County Emergency Management discusses preparing for potential Hurricane Beryl impacts

BRYAN, Texas (KBTX) – Although it’s still too soon to tell how Hurricane Beryl will exactly impact the Brazos Valley, officials say now is the time to make sure you have everything you could need.

“Preparedness season starts January 1 and ends December 31. You should always be ready for anything and everything,” said Deputy Emergency Management Coordinator Jason Ware.

Officials tell KBTX it’s always good to have the essentials with you in the event of a power outage, or if you need to leave the area.

“Having that kit with everything from flashlights to 72 hours worth of water and food that doesn’t expire are always beneficial,” said Ware.

We checked with Academy Sports & Outdoors in College Station for a better look at what should go in an emergency kit.

“Freeze-dried foods with a high amount of protein sodium and carbohydrates so it can replenish your calorie intake as much as possible,” said Outdoors Team Lead Colin Malone.

Malone says the foods have a long shelf life and won’t go bad.

“If it comes to an emergency situation, at least you have it,” he added.

The team at Brazos County Emergency Management says it’s never a bad idea to be prepared.

“It’s not a matter of if it happens, it’s when it happens,” said Jason Ware.
